Thalassemia is genetic blood disorder in which body doesn't produce hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is protein in red blood cells carries oxygen. That may lead to anemia, from mild to severe forms.
Symptoms of Thalassemia:
Symptoms vary based (minor, intermedia, or major), but may include
- Fatigue and weakness
- Pale or yellowish ski
- Facial bone deformities
- Slow growth
- Abdominal swelling (enlarged spleen/liver
- Dark urine
- Shortness of breath
Treatment Options:
- Regular blood transfusions (especially for Thalassemia Major)
- Iron chelation therapy (to remove excess iron from transfusions)
- Folic acid supplements
- Bone marrow/stem cell transplant (potential cure in some cases)
- Gene therapy (emerging treatment)
